Legal battle could emerge as unparalleled

The Clinton administration has filed a groundbreaking lawsuit against tobacco companies for allegedly deceiving the public about the health risks of smoking. The government said the tobacco industry launched a decades-long campaign in the 1950s to insist that there was no proof that smoking causes cancer despite studies showing a link between the two. The goverment is seeking to recoup the the billions of tax dollars spent on treating smoking-related illnesses through Medicare and other health programs.

Tobacco cash isn't just for health care: states to use settlement for local problems
Article Abstract:
An initial $2.4 billion of the $206 billion tobacco court settlement will be released in Dec 1999 to 46 states. The money is expected to cover health care programs for most states, while some will be channeled to funding for public schools, crop farms, infrastructure, children's and senior citizens' services and other local and budget needs. Another $6.4 billion from the 25-year settlement will be released in 2000.

Tobacco trial to begin in Brooklyn
Article Abstract:
A two-month trial pitting a trust fund for six asbestos workers against RJ Reynolds International, Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp and other large tobacco companies is scheduled to begin in a New York, NY, court on Nov 20, 2000. Lawyers from the plaintiffs believe that damages could exceed $3 billion, which includes tobacco companies' share for the cost of treating patients with cigarette-related illnesses.
