Parking unparalleled as airport cash cow
Article Abstract:
Parking fees are a major and extremely important source of income for US airports. For instance, 14.8 million vehicles parked at John F. Kennedy International, La Guardia and Newark airports in 1999 to bring in $127.5 million in revenues for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A Port Authority spokesman said the figure represented roughly 10% of total revenues earned at the three airports in 1999. A parking industry expert noted that major airports typically contract with a company to run their lots and ordinarily receive 80%-90% of the revenue.
