Magnetic vs. inertial
Article Abstract:
Nuclear fusion research is undoubtedly expensive and Congress is looking for ways to minimize it. DOE Dir Robert Hunter presented a proposal to Congress that suggests research funding be focused on inertial fusion energy rather than magnetic fusion energy. Hunter's plan resulted into adebate among physicists on which of the two fusion methods had more potential. Although intervention by the Fusion Polciy Advisory Committee spared Congress from having to decide between the two fusion technologies, research funding andgovernment support continued to dissipate.

New enthusiasm
Article Abstract:
Nuclear fusion research is far from being a complete success. However, scientists and DOE officials have reason to be more optimistic for the year 1993. Congress has recently granted $339 million worth of research funding, themost federal aid had been since 1990. The Energy Policy Act of 1992 also included provisions for nuclear fusion research. The recent success in England's JET experimental reactor, which was able to generate 1.7 million power watts, also added a new fervor among scientists to pursue nuclear fusion energy research.

Hard times
Article Abstract:
Fusion energy research is losing financial support from the federal government. Druing the 1980s, the interest of Congress began to wane most fusion program research started to lose its momentum. In order to remain viable, numerous fusion programs had to resort to drastic measures such as laying-off workers. The Mirror Fusion Test Facility of Lawrence Livermore Laboratory is one such example of a costly research valued at $327 million that was suddenly aborted after nine years of scientific work.
