Military contract haunts Intermec
Article Abstract:
Intermec Corp's shares plunged $4.50 to $18.25 per share on May 23, 1990, after its 4th qtr profits came in lower than expected. The lower profit was a result of a military contract in which Intermec provides bar-coding equipment and services to all branches of the military. Each branch of the military decides how much of the equipment they need. Recent cuts in defense spending have caused all branches to consign bar-coding to a lower priority. Intermec was expecting the military contract to provide between $3 million and $3.5 million in revenue for the quarter, but it only provided $2.3 million. Intermec made $3.7 million on revenues of $46.1 million in the 4th qtr as compared with $3.1 million on revenues of $40.3 million in the same period in 1989.
