Computer maker fills a top post; Thinking Machines to appoint lawyer
Article Abstract:
Massively-parallel-supercomputer maker Thinking Machines Corp goes outside the high-technology community to name experienced corporate lawyer Richard P. Fishman its new president and chief operating officer. Fishman leaves a managing partner position in the Washington, DC, office of the Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy law firm to join Machines, which he has represented since early 1992 in contract negotiations with the government. He replaces Harvey L. Weiss, who resigned Aug 18 after just seven months on the job. Fishman has worked closely with Thinking Chmn and CEO Sheryl Handler during his association with Machines. Inside sources say Handler and other board members consider Fishman capable of leading Machines to success in attracting new commercial customers in the increasingly competitive supercomputer market. Ten-year-old, privately held Machines is a $100 million enterprise that lost almost $17 million in 1992.
