Sue Rubin, an autistic individual of 26 years, was considered severely mentally retarded, with an IQ of 24, during the first 13 years of her life. But when she began communicating with a keyboard, her brain became organized enough to understand what was going on in the world around her, and she also became aware of herself and her autism.
