One viewer's violence is another viewer's action
Article Abstract:
The subjective definition of violence and violent acts poses a difficulty for trained monitors to rate or index violence in television. Against accusations that even slapstick comedy routines are rated as violent, several media research organizations define violence as deliberate hostile acts, whether physical or with the use of a weapon, aimed to achieve specific goals and purposes. Some monitoring groups also assign weights to violent acts, serving to mitigate or aggravate ratings of the use of violence.

Music videos that flirt with violence
Article Abstract:
'Dreamworlds: Desire/Sex/Power in Rock Video' is a 55-minute collage of violent acts depicted in music videos. Produced by communications professor Sut Jhally, it supports criticism that videos employ sexual themes for promotion, possibly inclining viewers toward violence and the view of women as sex objects. Senator Robert Byrd also criticized videos for their portrayal of irresponsibility and as a way toward happiness. However, some studies show that violence makes music videos unappealing to viewers.

TV news: violence is part of our world tonight
Article Abstract:
Television newscasts face task of reporting the truth which sometimes necessitates the broadcast of violent footages. In spite of this responsibility, newscasts are increasingly criticized for contributing to the desensitization of society through extensive or unnecessary broadcasts of violent acts. In view of a newscast's responsibility to report truth and ensure high ratings, some newscasters precede the airing of violent footages with warnings and advisories.
