Open season at the inhuman zoo
Article Abstract:
The notorious Pentridge, Australia, prison complex, almost 150 years old, is now open for tourists. Part of the prison likely will be maintained as a museum, but the current tours will stop when the prison is handed over to the Department of Treasury and Finance in April 1998. Until Nov 1997 the complex, near Melbourne, was in use as a human warehouse to break body and spirit. There are preservation orders on many of the historical buildings and the bluestone perimeter wall.

Big day out
Article Abstract:
The average Australian wedding now costs $22,434, spurring a $2 billion annual industry. Despite rising numbers of divorces and remarriages, 'no expense spared' seems to be a common motto. More than a dozen magazines now compete with Australian Bride, which was founded in 1955. They promote the hiring of wedding planning professionals, for everything from attire to party-reception planning.
