Western Canadian wheat growers are optimistic about the prices wheat will bring in spring 1996. Due to a low wheat supply worldwide, the Canadian Wheat Board estimates that a record high of $271 to $291 will be paid per ton for benchmark No. 1 Western Canadian Red Spring Wheat.

Poor fall weather has prevented farmers on the Canadian prairie from harvesting their grain crops. Agriculture Minister Ralph Goodale has proposed revamping the Canadian Wheat Board. Producer groups want even more marketing freedom for farmers.
