A piece of the action
Article Abstract:
Australia's politician of the left Meg Lees and radical conservative John Howard have joined to explore tax reform and the goods and service tax (GST). The odds and external pressures suggest they will strike a deal on tax reform. Howard wants to be known as the great tax reformer even if he has to compromise on the GST. It is expected that Lees will drop other amendments, but exempt food, rather than risk a double dissolution.

MR 1% hangs on for his life
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister John Howard's 1998 reelection came as a surprise to many because the Labor Party gained 20 seats to secure Howard's victory. The Goods and Services Tax proposed may not pass in the Senate, unless Howard agrees with Democrats and exempts food, books, and health and education services.
