It is likely that many Australians are taking more drugs than necessary or healthy, sometimes creating side-effects that they do not connect with the drugs. Benzodiazepines, for example, are still prescribed more frequently and for longer than many experts see as healthy. In contrast, others are experiencing illnesses that could be prevented if certain drugs were used more widely, especially in treating diabetes and asthma.
