The political use of nationalism as a unifying force in economically challenging times is what divides the Balkans. Nations use globalization to strengthen their ties to overseas aid donors while pursuing exclusionary political aims at home. Australians are suspicious of excessive patriotism, but their treatment of the Aborigines exposes the illusion of national unity and benevolence.
