In early 2001, The Bulletin magazine conducted an investment round table in the aftermath of the weakening global economy, the high technology crash, the financial crisis in Asia, and the US Federal Reserve's changing monetary policy. Fund managers predicted that these factors would result in a troubled Australian economy, and their predictions proved to be correct, but in July they were more positive about the investment outlook.

Australian election campaigning in the past was based largely on ignoring the safe seats and focusing most resources and campaigning efforts on the marginal seats. In current elections, however, safe seats have become more marginal because voters are becoming disillusioned with, and less faithful to, the major parties and are choosing, instead, to vote for the minor party candidates.
