Pros and consciences

Article Abstract:

The abortion debate in Perth, West Australia, has become intense since the arrest of two doctors Feb 1998 for allegedly carrying out an illegal abortion. A bill in the Upper House, initiated by Cheryl Davenport, calls for the abolishment of the criminal code as it applies to abortion and the Lower House will vote on a government-sponsored bill that seeks to amend the code to permit legal abortion on wider grounds. Presently, the state's abortion law makes it a criminal offence to carry out an abortion, unless the woman's life is in danger.

Surrogacy may get the nod

Article Abstract:

Western Australia may pass a legislation supporting surrogacy. Currently it does not have a definitive position and so the mother who bears the child is considered to have the rights rather than the genetic mother. The state is seeing a 10-15% increase in couples seeking treatments for infertility. Although the technology is available locally the legal position is prompting parents to seek treatment overseas. The law will clarify the rights of all the parties concerned.
