Protecting children
Article Abstract:
The history of children's rights in the US goes back to colonial times, but most legislation on the issue has occurred in the 20th century. In colonial times children were viewed as property, but 17th century legislation set the stage for the legal concept of 'parents' and the 'battered child' defense. Private groups of the 19th century began laying the framework for court-sanctioned protection of children, and 1899 saw the creation of the first juvenile court. A national child-labor law was passed in 1941, after decades of lobbying by children's advocates. Until the 1990s legislation tended to stress parental rights, rather than the autonomy of children.

The flap over gay literature for children
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of issues concerning the use of homosexual-related publications in US learning institutions is presented. Books such as 'Daddy's Roommate' and 'Heather Has Two Mommies' are examples of controversial publications that portray homosexual households. Right-wing groups have criticized publications of this nature calling them inappropriate literature for primary school students. Publishers of these books believe that educational institutions have an obligation to teach children socially relevant issues.

Children's causes
Article Abstract:
Most children's rights suits are aimed at providing children with constitutional rights to improved services from government institutions. Advocates have filed suit in many courts to force child protection services to improve their care of children. Most cases, however, deal with educational matters. Advocates believe that courts are still too biased towards parent's rights to adequately address the issues of child abuse and neglect.
