Rebels with a cause

Article Abstract:

Young working Indonesians support the 1998 student revolts against the government. Merchants who once looked forward to a middle-class life are having trouble earning enough money for food. Businesses have closed. Indonesians under 30 years of age, who make up more than 50% of the Indonesian population, are upset at corruption in the government and high unemployment rates. A cultural gap between old and younger Indonesians also fuels resentment.

Busting up the party: Beijing reins in high-flying dealmakers

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government closed down the Guangdong International Trust and Investment Corp., one of the most prominent investment companies. The move indicates the government's policy towards shaking up the chaotic economic situation in the country. China has avoided the sweep of the Asian crisis because the government was expected to cover all debts. This shut down sends a significant message.
