Recycling answer sought for computer junk
Article Abstract:
Increasingly powerful computers and decreasing prices of hardware have brought about the problem of getting rid of obsolete computers. Americans are found to discard more than 10 million computers a year. Companies such as Advanced Recovery dismantles the machines and sells the retrievable parts to wholesalers and computer maintenance shops. The East-West Education Development Foundation refurbishes the discarded machines and distributes them to groups in 130 countries. The government and the computer industry have initiated a collaborative approach to come up with an environmentally viable computer that conserves energy and uses recyclable materials. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will issue Energy Star logos starting in Jun 1993 to machines that use energy-saving circuitry and chips. The Clinton administration's Design for Environment program mandates the early collaboration of industry and government to prevent pollution rather than control the damage after it happens.

When the therapist is a computer
Article Abstract:
Computerized psychotherapy is introduced in the workplace as companies, such as the Walt Disney Co, Pacific Bell and Beatrice Hunt Wesson, offer their stressed-out employees on-line counseling. The program that Pacific Bell uses was created by Dr Roger Gould, a University of California at Los Angeles clinical psychiatrist. Gould, who runs a counseling center for corporate clients, designed the program to be completed in 10 sessions at a cost of $600 to $800. Gould says the advantage of computerized psychotherapy is that many people find the computer less threatening and that the program encourages users to get to the issues quickly. He adds that the computer is used only for stress-related work and family problems and not for treating alcoholics or those who are taking medication for depression.
