Serbian protesters continued to demonstrate in Belgrade during Jan 1997, and the opposition coalition appears to be winning its battle against Pres Slobodan Milosevic. However, some opposition leaders seem to be supporters of nationalism and do not put ethnic tolerance high on their agenda.

France's Sep 1995 nuclear test near the Mururoa atoll was condemned by governments, citizen protesters, and pro-independence activists in French Polynesia. The Polynesian activists rioted in Papeete, Tahiti. Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, and Australia strongly protested the French test.

Israel mistakenly bombed a UN base near Qana, Lebanon, killing more than 100 Lebanese refugees who were seeking shelter there. The bombing campaign in Apr 1996, was in retaliation for rocket attacks launched by Hezbollah guerrillas. Many world leaders condemned Israel for the attack.
