The US assistant secretary for economic affairs, Stuart Eizenstat, in Dec 1998 brought together 44 nations and 13 nongovernmental organizations for the Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets. Eizenstat spoke about stolen Jewish arts, compensation for seized insurance policies, and other topics. He contends that major progress has been made in recent years in restoring art, bank accounts, and other assets.
