Slow burner

Article Abstract:

Shale oil is considered the fuel of the future. However, extracting oil from rock remains a difficult task, which has made it difficult for companies to attract investors. Australia's only large shale oil deposits are at Gladstone in central Queensland, estimated to be worth $24 bil. The recovery is difficult because it requires mining, hauling, crushing, and heating at 500 degrees Celsius to turn organic material into the shale, kerogen into oil.

Hasta la vista, El Nino

Article Abstract:

The 1997 El Nino was not quite as bad for Australian agriculture as predicted, but the cumulative effect of 6 drought years in eastern Australia has been devastating. More than $800 million in federal relief aid has been paid to farmers. Meteorologists are now divided on predictions of continued El Nino conditions, with some believing that it has become a permanent climatological feature.

The jet-set and go miners

Article Abstract:

Australian miners were once pioneers but now represent a small percentage of the labor force that fly from one mining site to the other. They work 10 to 12 hour shifts and rarely spent their earned money locally. Consequently, towns such as Meekatharra, Laverton, and Leonora in Western Australia, are missing out on the benefits of new mines.
