The Bloc Quebecois lost official opposition status in the Jun 1997 election, dropping from 54 seats in 1993, to only 44 seats in 1997. The decline reveals the divisions within the party and disenchantment with Lucien Bouchard's fiscal policies. It could hinder Quebec's sovereigntist movement.

A bomb exploded in Centennial Olympic Park on Aug 3, 1996, killing one person and injuring around 100 others. The explosion made athletes and spectators nervous, but did not stop the Games. Canadian athletes Donovan Bailey, Kathleen Heddle and Marnie McBean won gold medals the next day.
