In February 2001, The Bulletin magazine in Australia initiated a stock-picking series called "Surviving 2001" that has proved highly successful for any small investors who followed its suggestions. 17 of the 19 suggested stocks made average gains of 17% in a five-month period.

Air New Zealand like many other airlines in the Asia-Pacific area is facing a difficult time in 2001. The airline needs to find funds of almost 5 billion dollars to survive, but its value has halved over six months.
