Corporations piling up more debt
Article Abstract:
Corporate debt is rising along with the expanding economy. The Federal Reserve says outstanding corporate debt has risen 10.2% to $3.7 trillion in 1998, topping the 8.2% increase in 1997. A recent notable example is AT&T, which has launched a $7 billion bond offering to help pay for its $55 billion purchase of Tele-Communications Inc. Some experts, however, say the trend could cause trouble in the future when companies become too leveraged and would have to resort to spending cuts and lay offs.
