Swiss to sever gold's link to franc
Article Abstract:
Switzerland will sever the gold's formal link to the franc. However, a proposal to sell up to 1,300 tons of its gold reserves would require a separate vote by the Swiss electorate, probably in the spring of 2000. The sales would be spaced out over a series of years to soften its impact on the world market. Gold prices have been hovering below $300 an ounce because of threat of gold sales by the world's central banks, which own a combined 30,000 tons.
