Ford: more buyers, more money

Ford Motor Co Vice Pres Wolfgang Reitzle disclosed that he is not worried about the prevailing declining demand for new cars and trucks in the US. He considers the slowdown as a challenge for the automaker to streamline its operations and refocus on cost-cutting measures that will not sacrifice product quality. He also believes that 2001 holds a big opportunity for Ford as it is about to launch its Premier Automotive Group, an agglomeration of the company's upscale brands.

GM: Washington might help

General Motors Corp (GM) CEO G Richard Wagoner has begun to see 2001 with optimism after he attended President-elect Bush's economic summit. After the meeting, he realized that the industry suffering from slowing demand will have help from federal officials. Previously, Wagoner made drastic measures as a response to the slowdown. He approved a 1st qtr 2001 production cuts of 2.1% and put an end to GM's oldest auto brand, the Oldsmobile.
