John McDonald, former art critic of the Sydney Morning Herald, has been appointed to the National Gallery's committee. Opponents of this move, noting McDonald's negative attitude toward most modern Australian art, feel this appointment will unnecessarily prejudice the committee. Supporters feel McDonald will make a strong curator despite his lack of university training and museum experience
