Tissue engineering is becoming closer to reality as research organizations and biotech companies race to get to the market first. The technology, which allows laboratory grown tissues to replace damaged tissues, is projected to eventually create an $80 billion industry, said Peter Johnson, former president of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative. However, huge obstacles such as those related to financing, technology and regulations stand in the way.
