The New York state lottery uses the slogan 'Hey, you never know' to get poor and middle class people to buy lottery tickets. Gov George Pataki dislikes the slogan and says the lottery should emphasize that funds go to education. This is disingenuous, because most people do not care where the funds go.

Colin Powell and the Miss America contest

Polls show that Gen Colin Powell is nearly as popular as Pres Clinton and Sen Bob Dole. Powell seems to have a confusing set of political beliefs, which might fit in well with the divergent American electorate. The decision to keep the Miss America swimsuit competition is also discussed.

Arthur Ashe was outraged when USA Today discovered that the former tennis player had AIDS. However, his right to privacy was secondary to freedom of the press, and the obligation of USA Today to inform its readers that a public figure was suffering from a well-known disease.
