UAW agrees to 4-year contrct
Article Abstract:
DaimlerChrysler AG and the UAW have agreed on a four-year labor contract, which is one year longer than the usual contract and will provide workers with 3% yearly wage hikes within three years as well as a signing bonus of $1,350. The deal, which is also the first of several UAW negotiations with carmakers in Detroit, MI, is set to become the model for all other UAW talks. The contract is also seen as a barrier to Ford Motor Co's intention to spin off its auto parts division since it has a clause that prohibits automakers to spin off or divest divisions.

What a sweet ride
Article Abstract:
The US automobile industry is projected to sell a record of more than 17 million new cars and trucks in 1999, almost one million more than the current record of 16.05 new vehicles sold in 1986. The record year will cap the five consecutive years of strong sales, with expensive sport- utility vehicles and luxury cars as among the biggest gainers. The six- year boom has resulted in an average of two cars per household or one of every person of 16 or older. It also benefitted peripheral industries such as auto dealers, gas stations and lenders.
