US West phone workers strike
Article Abstract:
US West's unionized workers have staged a strike that affected over 25 million subscribers an 14 Midwest and western states. The main issue of the strike is the local phone provider's proposal to pay its technicians based on performance. A spokesman for US West said that the plan empowers the employees, but the Communications Workers of America said that the proposal would serve as a disincentive to customer service because a technician who comes across a potential problem would ignore it rather than forego his bonus.

In addition to his able handling of the medical systems unit, observers cite Immelt's young age, which observers say is something Welch wants so that his successor can lead the company for a substantial period of time.
