U.S. ambivalence
Article Abstract:
The US believes it should remain a central figure in European defense matters in spite of the end of the Cold War. With the collapse of the USSR, the US became the only remaining superpower, a position it seeks to retain by maintaining an active presence in Europe. However, Western European nations are seeking to consolidate military alliances outside the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization in spite of heavy opposition from the US.

The World War II saw notions that United States would help defeat the Axis powers to restore freedom to occupied democratic countries and to spread democracy. But the creation of sphere of influence for the Soviet Union flopped the plans for democracy after the war.
