Visit to a tiny planet: within glass walls, five climates and 3,800 species
Article Abstract:
Space Biosphere Ventures, initially funded with $30 million from Texas multi-millionaire Edward Perry Bass, plans Biosphere II, which is an airtight, watertight glass-walled structure covering 3.15 acres. Biosphere II is intended as a self-sustaining, independent environment, with connections to the outside world for electricity and information. Biosphere II, located at Oracle, AZ, at the edge of the Sonora Desert, will include a tiny ocean, a miniature rain forest, savanna, marsh and desert. There will be 3,800 species of plants, animals and insects, living in balanced interdependence as in nature. There will also be a 20,000-square-foot farm. Four men and four women will live in the structure during the next two years. Computers connected to 3,000 sensors will regulate temperatures, humidities, artificial tides and seasons. Scientists differ about the project's value.
