The compensation of chief executive officers averaged $30.5 million in 1998, up by 36% from $22.4 million in 1997. The compensation includes salary, short- and long-term bonuses, value of restricted stocks, gains from exercising stock options and the 12-month rise in value of unexercised stock optiomns. The top three CEOs based on compensation were Millard Drexler of Gap ($494.6 million), Timothy Koogle of Yahoo ($476.4 million) and Louis Gerstner Jr of IBM ($338.1 million)
