Struggling software firms turn into takeover targets

The Internet software market is consolidating. In 1st qtr 2001, 380 mergers and acquisitions totaling $13 billion took place in the Internet software market. The figure is up from 211 deals worth $5 billion in the previous quarter. Among the deals are PeopleSoft's acquisition of SkillsVillage, an upstart Web-services firm. More consolidation is expected as software makers are confronted with problems such as the increasing players in the field and the flagging stock prices.

Power woes fuel profits at refineries
Article Abstract:
Oil refiners have doubled and tripled their profits in 2001 over 2000, on the back of ever-thinning fuel supplies. For years, oil companies have been shedding their refinery operations because they were capital-intesive and difficult to run profitably. Without enough refineries on line to produce gasoline to meet demand, refinery margins are rising and are likely to keep doing so for the next couple of years.
