Why the story matters
Article Abstract:
This article examines the relevance of whether Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush used cocaine or other illegal drugs in his youth, and argues that journalists are justified in asking such questions because young adults are receiving long prison sentences for doing what Bush may or may not have done. Relevant points include the need for a national debate on the draconian drug laws that have swelled the nation's prisons with many nonviolent offenders.
