Danger - S-bend ahead
Article Abstract:
The Australia dollar is not likely to take a currency dive similar to what happened in 1985. Interest rates are lower and business borrowing has been less speculative. Businesses are also leaner and in a better position to react to a predicted flood of imports. Inflation is not expected to increase to 1985 levels and the slowing of the economy due to the Asian crisis will help restrain price increases.

Keep your eye on the signposts
Article Abstract:
Investors should keep a close eye on US economic growth, expected earnings, overvaluation and whether small investors start pulling out of the stock market. Asia has slowed the US growth, but no-one is predicting a recession. Japan should also be watched. Bank collapses are looming and slow economic growth will effect Australia's commodity prices. Australians must also watch local indicators.

Too early to forecast Asia impact
Article Abstract:
It is too early to forecast the impact of Asia's economic crisis on Australia. Japan is the area to watch with many banks in trouble due to excess lending. Australia is on a general economic upswing at the end of 1997. The Asian crisis is expected to reduce Australia's GDP, but it is not expected to impact the considerably high growth rate estimated at 3.2%.
