Alcoholics Anonymous as a condition of drunk driving probation: when does it amount to establishment of religion?

Article Abstract:

Probationary orders for drunk driving convictions that require participation in Alcoholics Anonymous programs violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, and compulsory participation should only be ordered when non-secular options are available. Alcoholics Anonymous and its 12-step program are explicitly religious, and compelling participation would violate the separation of church and state. In light of Warner v. Orange County Department of Probation, California has enacted a model statute that identifies when self-help programs may be mandated by the courts.

Ms. behavin' again

Article Abstract:

Gloria Steinem has reached the age of 65 and is at peace with herself and the aging process. She has repurchased Ms. magazine with a group of investors called Liberty Media for Women, and hopes to expand the journal's coverage to appeal to more than one generation of feminists. She feels she has passed through many stages of life and wants to enjoy it now as a complete human being rather than a woman who is afraid of moving away from her sexual appeal.

Canned or conned

Article Abstract:

A pet peeve of budget-conscious consumers is the amount of unusable liquid packing in canned food products. Testing reveals that, on average, at the most 60-70% of canned tuna, fruit or vegetable products are actually food. Manufacturers are encouraged to include labelling information so consumers can make properly informed food-purchasing decisions. Tabular data on the food content is broken down according to producer.
