Tax and the CBA buyback
Article Abstract:
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) made an offer to buy back its own shares under very appealing circumstances in Nov. 1997, but there are tax implications at the end of the tax year. Many small investors took advantage of the offer, which involved special tax arrangements. A buyback transaction is seen as a sale on the part of the shareholder but not as a buy by the company buying shares back for tax purposes.
