5 cent Sundays ... the future of electricity prices?
Article Abstract:
It is very advantageous for consumers if electric power can be had for five cents per kilowatt-hour during Sundays. Electric utilities may also exploit the situation to increase their market share. However, the pricing of electricity is more complicated because of its peculiar characteristics. Electric power cannot be stored to a great degree and is essentially a commodity which is produced on demand. There is volatility in the hourly and seasonal costs of producing electricity. It also has unique purchase criteria and has been deemed almost as a public right. Utilities also face constraints in delivering electric power to consumers.
