Article Abstract:

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A's) are the growing trend among electric utilities as they strive to maintain strategic advantage and competitiveness. M&A's allow market expansion, efficiency, cost savings and increase in financial strength. The merger of the Kansas Power and Light Co with Kansas Gas and Electric Co offers a transaction structure that may provide outlines on regulations the federal government may follow in the future. Regulatory policies are deemed to become more refined and stringent as regulators evaluate proposals based in part on precedents.
