Testing the waters
Article Abstract:
A move by Congress to repeal section 316a of the Clean Water Act of 1972 was opposed by utilities, which argued that the action overlooks the ecological benefits fostered by the provision. Section 316a grants utilities variances provided site-specific studies can show that setting alternative limits would result in ecological benefits. Utilities alleged that the proposed abolition reflected existing misconceptions categorizing thermal discharges as pollutants. They explained that with proper management, discharges can even be used to protect and enhancespecific biological habitats.

Riding the fourth wave: the system integration revolution
Article Abstract:
Computer system integration is expected to provide electric utilities with the capability to become more responsive to customer needs and to create more reliable and efficient electric systems. Previous attempts to create integrated systems have been hampered by the incompatibility of most computer protocols, specifications and profiles. This prompted the National Institute of Standards and Technology to initiate a project, already nearing completion, to reconcile open sytem profiles developed separately by electric utilities, government and the manufacturing industries.
