The economy, consumers, and Y2K
Article Abstract:
Economists have raised concerns that the year 2000 (Y2K) computer problem will cause a recession. However, a recent Standard and Poor's publication said that is unlikely since most financial markets are already Y2K compliant. Moreover, electric utilities have prepared for Y2K via failsafe devices and by keeping workers on standby on midnight Dec 31, 1999. A consumer survey also showed that 84% of residential customers are aware of the Y2K problem while 59% do not believe that the national electricity system will shutdown.
