The electric bicycle: a market and a mover
Article Abstract:
The potential market for electric bicycles is huge, considering that global sales of bicycles increase by about 100 mil every year. In US, bicycle sales account for 10% of the world market, reaching a volume of 12 mil units sold for 1995. More than 5 mil Americans regularly use bicycles to commute everyday and the number of individuals wanting to use bikes to commute are increasing. Demand for electric bikes in US has increased to 100,000 units per year, with worldwide sales exceeding $200 mil annually. Electric bikes are currently employed by industrial users, couriers, commuters and recreational cyclists.

Circulating fluidized bed combustion systems
Article Abstract:
Combustion efficiency, fuel flexibility and effective emissions control are the advantages gained in using circulating fluidized bed technology. It can also be constructed and maintained cost-effectively. It can use low-grade fuels that have a high degree of finely crushed material, low in volatilty and BTU output. Besides coal, it can also utilize petroleum coke, oil, oil shale, sewage sludge, old tires and peat. The technology attains a combustion efficieny of 98% and the low combustion temperatures curbs the production of nitrogen oxide.

Using superconductivity in electric power systems
Article Abstract:
Superconductivity Inc has developed a new superconducting magnetic energy storage apparatus for electric power systems. The SSD, which is contained in a semitrailer, uses energy stored in a magnet. This magnet is fed by a direct current through a coil made of superconducting materials that have zero electrical resistance. SSD can be used to neutralize the adverse effects caused by momentary voltage interruptions on electrical and electronic equipments.
