Wild world
Article Abstract:
Wilderness photographer Colin Prior, who is noted for his panoramic images, believes that great wilderness photography depends more upon the scene's natural light than on the landscape. Timing his arrival to get the best possible weather and light is his biggest professional problem. He recently completed photographing 13 of the world's most phenomenal wildernesses for inclusion in the 1997 British Airways calendar. His chosen locations ranged from Norway's Lofoten Islands to the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean and from Monument Valley in the US to Pakistan's Karakoram Mountains.

Rising from the rubble
Article Abstract:
Plans to redevelop Beirut, Lebanon's war-torn central business district (CBD) could restore the city's reputation for glamor and wealth. The Lebanese government has engaged Solidere, a private company, to rebuild Beirut's CBD over the next 23 years. Solidere is striving to preserve archeological findings underneath the rubble of the former CBD while constructing office and apartment buildings, marketplaces, and marinas. Beirut was nearly destroyed by 20 years of civil war between Arab Muslims and Christians.

Open skies
Article Abstract:
The deregulation of the European air industry means cheaper fares but dangers, especially to residents of Europe's remoter regions, are also possible. Once called public service obligation routes, such routes were partially funded by state subsidies. When commercial motives become the order of the day, airlines may stop servicing such regions. The European policy of encouraging more competitive air travel may shut out those who need air transport the most.
