SWITZERLAND: REORGANISATION OF SCHWEIZERHALL
Article Abstract:
The Swiss Schweizerhall group has changed its organisational structure so that in future the three divisions of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and luxury goods (Parfums Boucheron) will be independent under the umbrella of Schweizerhall Holding. Schweizerhall has made use of its option to acquire the 49% of shares of Boucheron it did not already own. The chemicals trade division was strengthened through the acquisition of the Synopharm division of Siegfried AG of Zofingen. Synopharm has an annual turnover of SFr 13mn. On the other hand, Schweizerhall sold its 12.5% stake in Saurefabrik Schweizerhalle to Novartis and Clariant. The new structure reflects Schweizerhall's wish to become an international service provider with a high value-added rather than merely a Swiss trading company. In the first half of 1999 Schweizerhall saw turnover fall by 6.2% to SFr 295.5mn, to which industrial chemicals contributed SFr 114mn (SFr 123mn in the year earlier period), fine chemicals SFr 101mn (SFr 117mn) and luxury goods SFr 81mn (SFr 74mn). Operating profit fell from SFr 3.4mn to SFr 0.5mn, but it is expected to recover in the second half. The fall in the first half is explained with the fall of industrial chemical prices and the reorganisation of the fine chemicals division.
