Shell legt Grundstein f r weltgr sstes Werk
Article Abstract:
German Hamburg-based Shell Solar Deutschland GmbH is building in Gelsenkirchen the world's largest factory for solar cell production. The Royal Dutch/Shell group expects renewable energies to meet 5-10% of the world's energy demand in 2010. At present, solar energy accounts only for 0.004% of Germany's electricity generation. With the new plant, Shell is to contribute to the development of solar energy technology to a fully competitive level. Innovative production methods, such as thin-film technology, are to cut production costs by half. Later on, 13mn solar cells with a capacity of 24 MV are to be produced annually in Gelsenkirchen. The first production line is to be put into operation in the summer of 1999. A part of the factory's production is to be used for modules which Pilkington Solar International is to produce in a factory near by. Pilkington, which holds a 20% stake in Shell Solar, is to invest DM 30mn in the module factory which is also to have an information centre for solar energy.
