A Commentary on Color Conscious: The Political Morality of Race(*)
Article Abstract:
Two essays by Amy Gutmann and Anthony Appiah make up the book 'Color Conscious: The Political Morality of Race.' Together the essays give a highly illuminating account of political and moral implications of race. A broader effort by Americans will be required to get closer to the liberal democratic ideal. Public opinion polls indicate that a majority of Americans will accept color-conscious social policies to get to that ideal, as long as they are sure that the policies are as fair as they can be. If color-conscious policies avoid continual tracking by color, have explicit time limits and attempt to compensate burdened parties where possible, the policies can be a component of a morally defensible plan to promote a just society. Americans must better respond to changes in the structure of the economy which have changed work for all Americans. Alteration has come especially for Americans who have been disadvantaged by racial discrimination but has affected others too. Discrimination on the basis of race did not end with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Mutual respect and neutral justification
Article Abstract:
Liberal neutrality can be given a neutral justification by acknowledging the authority of individuals to freely decide their beliefs based on opaque grounds of dispute. In this case, the belief relies upon the interpretation of experiences which cannot be publicly scrutinized. The first strategy to meet the conditions of inclusivity and neutrality for neutral justification is epistemic abstinence, while the second strategy argues for a special criterion of correctness.
