European perspectives on business ethics
Article Abstract:
The book 'Business Ethics: A European Approach,' edited by Brian Harvey, offers a comprehensive discussion of business ethics issues and provides examples and case studies from a European point of view. The book's chapters, written by 10 European authors from different countries, are analyzed. Business ethics is discussed on the chapter dealing with employers' and employees' rights and duties. According to the author of this chapter, Jef van Gerwen, American business ethics is biased toward management on labor issues while its European counterpart favors the employees.

Citizenship and democracy: the ethics of corporate lobbying
Article Abstract:
The book 'The Lobbyists: How Influence Peddlers Work Their Way in Washington,' by Jeffrey H. Birnbaum provides an insight into the ethical aspects of corporate lobbying. Birnbaum likens the lobbyists' methods to the board game of 'Go' where the strategy is to completely surround the opponent to prevent him/her from escaping or making a different decision. Thus, lobbyists have a substantial amount of influence on government and companies have to provide the moral basis to prevent lobbyists from fighting for unethical goals.

The normative theories of business ethics: a guide for the perplexed
Article Abstract:
The stockholder, stakeholder and social contract theories are the three leading normative theories of business ethics which feature three contradictory views of business people's ethical obligations. The stockholder theory is the oldest theory among the three and is held by contemporary business ethicists to be outdated and unacceptable as it reeks of rampant capitalism. The positive aspects of the stockholder theory versus the stakeholder and social contract theories are evaluated.
