How we got over: the moral teachings of the African-American church on business ethics

Article Abstract:

The African-American church possesses conflicting moral teachings on business ethics. Booker T. Washington's acceptance of capitalism and support for economic nationalism challenges the 'Blackwater' tradition, that renounces racial discrimination and champions social justice. The 'Washingtonian' approach has triumphed in the African-American church regardless of occasional challenges presented by the 'Blackwater' tradition. Currently, there is a need for a new business ethic that will meet the basic needs of America's disadvantaged members and those considered as 'international poor.'

Ethics education: three issues for further discussion

Article Abstract:

The book 'Ethical Marketing Decisions: The Higher Road' by Gene R. Laczniak and Patrick E. Murphy argues for compatibility between ethics and marketing. The ethical model based on the dual approaches of utilitarianism and deontology is comprehensive and defensible. Features such as hypothetical ethical scenarios, examples of exemplary behavior, and a managerial approach are the distinguishing features of the book. The presentation is realistic without being cynical about the role of ethics in marketing.

A critique of social contracts for business

Article Abstract:

The social contract theory as developed by Locke, Hobbs and Rousseau has three major limitations regarding the accuracy, normative authority and determinative strength of human nature. Donaldson, Keeley and Dunfee did pioneering work in applying social contract theory to the field of business ethics. Social contract theory for business will have to gain conceptual maturity and develop reliable methodologies before it can be successfully applied in testing business ethics.
