Nietzsche and the morality critics
Article Abstract:
The apparent similarity between Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and the Morality Critics lies in their rejection of morality as the determinative consideration in human life. The Nietzschean critique is directed against the effects of moral culture on the Extraordinary Life, while the Morality Critics target the inability of morality theories to accomodate the Good Life. Nietzsche's contention that moral culture obstructs human excellence offers a more speculative challenge to morality than the Morality Critics, who focus on the competing demands of the Good Life and the Moral Life.

Prudence and morality in Greek ethics
Article Abstract:
The traditional interpretation of Greek ethics should be maintained by rejecting the interpretations proposed by Julia Annas and Nicholas White. The traditional view is that both Plato and Aristotle appeal to prudence for justification of morality. Annas accepts that Greek ethicists want to justify morality, but she denies that the considerations they appeal to are prudential. White, on the other hand, accepts the appeal to prudence but denies that it is used to justify morality. However, their interpretations of ancient Greek ethical positions are questionable.

Prudence and morality in ancient and modern ethics
Article Abstract:
Modern ethical theory regards prudential reasoning as competing with moral reasoning, but in ancient ethical theory prudential reasoning is regarded as a stage that precedes moral reasoning. In other words, pursuit of self-interest is seen by ancient theorists such as the Stoics as a sign of moral immaturity. The comparison suggests that the prominent role given to prudential reasoning in modern ethical theory represents an assumption that should be questioned.
